Urwerk Zeit Device

Submitted by on September 2, 2011 – 12:21 PMNo Comment

Urwerk has done did it again.  Announced just this morning is a true “uber complication” of a wristwatch, the Zeit Device. What the Zeit Device can do is absolutely astonishing, and takes the concept of perpetual time keeping to a brand new level.  The Zeit Device UR-1001 marks the passage of time in seconds, minutes, hours, day/night, date, month, years, 100 years (centuries), all of the way to a monumental 1,000 years (millenia!!).

The UR-1001 features a bevy of Urwerk’s now trademark satellites and retrogrades and while the watch may sound complicated, because hey, a watch that can track a freaking millennium would have to be, it is actually really easy to read.

The time (minutes and hours) are displayed at the bottom of the watch and look very much like your typical Urwerk wristwatch.  We have broken out the front side the of the dial for you in a diagram below.  Of course, the calendar function does account for 30-day months and jumps two days when necessary.

On the backside, you’ll see Urwerk’s trademark 5 year “oil change” service indicator, along with the scales for both century and millennium.   The 100-year indicator advances in 5-year increments and acts like the odometer of a car. Where a car’s odometer keeps track of the total distance number at vehicle has driven, the 100-year and 1000-year indicators of the UR-1001 register the total running time of the movement.  And as for the 1000-year indicator? When the hand reaches the 100-year mark, the small pointer at the bottom of the 1000-year indicator on the left takes a small – small for the Zeit Device, but a giant leap for mankind – 100-year step upwards on its imperceptibly slow, but deliberate journey to a new millennium.

Only eight UR-1001′s will be made and each individually numbered.  The case of this piece is AlTiN coated stainless steel. AlTiN – Aluminium Titanium Nitride – is an industrial surface treatment originally developed to reduce the wear of machine cutting tools.  The movement of the UR-1001 consists of 51 jewels and circular-grained, Côtes de Genève and DLC treated mainplate and baseplate, chamfered and polished screw heads.  Despite the industrial look of this piece, every Urwerk is a true piece of fine watchmaking.

The dimensions of the Urwerk UR-1001 Zeit Device are: 106mm x 62mm x 23mm.
